For many people meditation has quickly become a part of daily life that cannot be done without. Since it can help with everything from relaxation to managing depression and even pain management, it should come as no surprise that more and more people are carving time out of their busy schedules to meditate. Having and environment that is exclusively dedicated to preventing distractions and promoting the right state of mind.

What room?

Meditation is not like feng shui. It does not to be a northward facing room with big windows. A spare bedroom or guest room will be perfect. If you don’t have an extra room in the house you still have options. A walk in closet or a sectioned off area of your attic or basement will all work. The most important thing is to choose an area of your home that is as far from distractions as possible.

Interior Design

While the room may not be very important the colors of the room are. The colors in the world around us have a direct impact on your state of mind. The pure cleanliness of white is an obvious choice, however, if you prefer to have colorful accents in your space there are other options. Cool colors make great additions to your calming space. Light blues and greens are known to relax emotions, while lavenders enhance spirituality. When decorating your space just avoid warm colors and stimulating patterns, reds, yellows, and oranges should be avoided. A few pillows on the floor or a comfortable chair are all you really need as far as furnishings go. You do not want to add trinkets and wall hangings avoid anything that would be distracting to the eyes or mind. If you add an altar to your room try to avoid clutter. A few candles and flowers or items you find comforting are perfect. Just try not to overfill the area.

Lighting

You will want some form of bright lighting in the space, overhead lights or lamps will do. Regardless of if you use the light during meditation, you will want to be able to see to properly clean your space. If you prefer to meditate in a dark space black out curtains will help create the right atmosphere if the room you’ve chosen has large windows. Adding a dimmer to your lighting fixture can also be extremely beneficial.

The most important thing is to make sure you are comfortable and feel at ease when you enter whatever space you have dedicated to your meditation.
