Let’s talk about death, specifically in regards to Tarot. The 13th trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional Tarot decks is the death card. Reading tarot is more than reading the name of the card. Read the symbolism. Read the artwork. Read the energy. The more you look, the more there is. Death in Tarot is an often misunderstood card. This often happens because people, especially when they are starting out, tend to view tarot as a science, rather than an art. They see it in black and white with simple and straight forward interpretations rather than an incredibly fluid, changing and personal method of divination. When a person thinks of Death in general, we tend to think of the end of a life. Sadness. Grief. We view Death as a thing to be feared and avoided. Death, in Tarot, does signal an end, but it also focuses on a new beginning. Just as nature and the moon show us with their cycles of death and rebirth, of entering shadow and growing back to full luminescence

The Death card can actually be one of the most positive cards in the deck. When you read tarot, focus on what the card itself is telling you. Not in its name. Not what the accompanying book says. What do you see? What do you feel? What does it say in relation to the question you presented it with? the Death card symbolizes the end of a major phase or aspect of your life that you realize is no longer serving you, opening up the possibility of something far more valuable and essential. You must close one door to open another. You need to put the past behind you and part ways, ready to embrace new opportunities and possibilities.
