Sigils and symbols have been around for as long as recoded history has been recorded. The first “writing” was done in symbols as you probably know. Some symbols are still in use today. The pentacle ( a star in a circle) for example is a frequently used and misunderstood symbol because of it is association with witchcraft, but it goes back as far as Babylonian times as a symbol of protection which was often put above doorways and windows. The pentacle represents the five elements: earth, air, fire, water and spirit and when placed in a circle it represents the unending and unwavering cycle of life as well as protection. It can be used as a source of psychic as well as physical protection. There are many different kinds of symbols and they are used in many ways. Astrology is famous for the symbology present in birth charts and the signs. Runes work with symbols. Tarot is full of symbology as well. Today we are looking at sigils.

A sigil is a symbol that you can infuse with energy as you paint or draw it and you can hold it in the palm of your hand and infuse it that way too. Also, because of the age of most sacred symbols there is a rich historical energy footprint associated with those symbols reaching back through time. In this way sigils connect us to different times and places.

The strongest sigils are created by the person using the sigil. You can incorporate colors, personal symbols, and the letters of your choice. It is important to trust your intuition when creating your sigil. The most common type of sigil created is done with words. You write out your intentions for the symbol in as few words as possible. For example instead of “I want to stop seeing ghosts and spirits,” would be written for a sigil as “Protection from spirit realm.” Then remove the vowels and repeated letters from the words. In this example you would be left with “PRTCTNFRMSPRTRLM.” Then you would combine these letters to create your sigil. You can also use imagery that resonates with you to replace words or phrases. Trust yourself and let the sigil form, below is a guide for how this example can be turned from intention to sigil.

Once you’ve completed your sigil work, do your best to put the sigil itself out of your mind and let it exist and do it’s job. Good luck and remember, you can’t do it wrong. Trust yourself.
