Depending how you feel in your dream this could also be a person you feel very threatened by. So a snake in this instance could signify attraction or be threatening, or both.
A snake biting you in your dream however could signify abuse, whether by you or someone else. Running away from a snake in your dream is you running away from a problem, or a person that you do not want to face.
If you are afraid of snakes in your waking life (I know I am!)- This could simply mean that whatever is going on in your waking life is something that you do not want to face so you are seeing snakes in your dreams. Whenever possible- you should try to face whatever it is head on so you can conquer the fear or obstacle in your path.
