Snow Superstitions
With the entire country getting snow this season you may be wondering if there are any superstitions you should be aware of. We have gathered the most widely held ones for you so you can be prepared even if you live in an area that doesn’t normally get covered in the tiny ice crystals.
Spoon under your pillow
If you are watching all the pictures of snow but the weather is not favoring your area, try sleeping with a cold spoon under your pillow. Similar to putting a knife under a pregnant woman’s pillow to cut the pains of labor, a cold spoon under your pillow is believed to help scoop snow into your area. Other common ones to bring on snow include flushing ice cubes down the toilet and wearing your pajamas inside out.
Snow and your Head
There is a superstition that says throwing the first snow of a snowfall over your head will guarantee good health. Also, a 1903 record of superstitions and folklore from around the U.S. and Europe notes: “Take a shovelful of the first snow and throw it over your head, and you will not be cold all winter.” Having snow fall on your head from a pine tree is also meant to be good luck.
Blood on snow
Everyone has heard the saying blood in the water, however not many have heard blood on the snow. This superstition comes from the 1903 compendium that offers no further comment re: what the luck is good for. “To see blood-stains in the snow, is good luck,” the record notes. Just good luck. That’s it. However, you shouldn’t try to clean it up. “Do not obliterate them. If they have been partially obliterated, it is bad luck to see them.”
Do you hold to a superstition when the world is blanketed in white? We would love to hear about it in the comments below.
