The tarot can be used for many different purposes. The archetypal images on the cards reflect your story back to you, helping you to better understand a specific moment in time, and your greater journey through life. Those same images make good meditation companions or can provide you with a ‘thought for the day.’ If you are new to Tarot you may be wondering when and why you should consult the deck, the answer is: there is no limit to how they can be used.

Any time you need guidance is a good time to consult the tarot. However, the best time to get a reading is when you are calm, when your energies are calm, and you are mentally and emotionally open to receiving the divine guidance that is meant for you. This doesn’t mean that you can only use the tarot when you are completely calm.

When you are angry or upset with something, pull a card asking for guidance and make a note of it. Give yourself a few hours or days, depending on what you are upset about, and then pull a card for guidance. when you are in an emotionally charged up situation, chances are that the reading will reflect your desires and energies at that time. It is important to wait until you have calmed down and can be open to hearing things that you may not really want to hear. When you are ready to listen to what the Universe has to tell you, really ready to pay attention to what’s going on that is when it’s a good time to reach out for the cards.

The divisions within the tarot may seem complicated at first, especially because each card provides context for the others in a spread; but once you recognize the underlying organization of the cards, you too can master the mysteries of the tarot.
