The four Elements in Astrology

There are four elements in astrology: fire, earth, air, and water. Each of the 12 signs is grouped into one of the four elements, so three signs are ruled by the same element. Together, they form the natural world, so each is in some way dependent on the other. But what does that mean for you? Read on to find out what you need to know about each of the four elements.

When analyzing a chart, your Sun sign and its corresponding element are not the only aspects to consider when determining your dominant element. Take into account the placement of the other planets in your natal chart to help determine your dominant element.  How the are signs grouped:

Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius                   

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Fire Signs

Fire signs are associated with summer when the weather is hot and dry. They represent action, emotion, creativity and drive. These signs are independent and do not like to sit still. However, they must be wary about burning out from so much activity. You can connect with your element by meditating near a source of heat or flame, or even just spending time out under the Sun.

Earth Signs

Earth signs are associated with autumn or fall when the weather is cold and dry. They represent substance, pragmatism, reason, and realist thinking. They are wise and love to serve others in times of need. But Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo need to be careful about being overly logical or letting their minds create a different version of events and situations. You can connect with your element by connecting with nature. You can practice grounding by walking barefoot outside, or simply add a few houseplants to your home.

Air Signs

Air signs are associated with spring when the weather is hot and wet. They represent duality, intelligence, openness, and ethereal thinking. Gemini, Leo, and Aquarius need to be wary of their innate commitment issues. Connecting with your element can be as simple as letting the wind blow across your face or lighting incense and tracing the smoke through the air.

Water Signs

Water signs are associated with winter when the weather is cold and wet. They represent passion, intuition, and sensitivity. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces must be careful in worrying about other people too much. You can connect with your element by swimming or soaking in a bath.
