I use dream symbolism analysis to help clients identify the meaning of their dream and to help them either gain closure on a past event or identify when a dream is more of a premonition of what is to come. One particular reading that stands out for me is when a client revealed a sudden onset of a reoccurring nightmare where they repeatedly saw a child frolicking and swimming in a lake only to suddenly start to be pulled under the water and struggling not to drown. This horrific dream was causing my client much distress and interfered in their ability to get a restful nights sleep for months on end. Upon further exploration it became clear that this particular dream had nothing to do with an actual drowning of a child. Rather it symbolized an earlier period of time in my clients life where they witnessed their mother being abused by their step-father when they were around the same age as the child in the reoccurring dream. The abusive household had left my client feeling trapped and helpless in a family setting that used to be loving but had changed soon after their mother had remarried. It was also no coincidence that the onset of their nightmare happened soon after they learned that their abusive stepfather had died. The dream analysis shared provided my client with validation about how the abusive environment they were exposed to as a child made them feel and more importantly the need for them to start healing and learning to release the associated negative emotions they kept bottled up for years. Once the association between the nightmare and their past exposure to domestic violence as a young child was established their reoccurring nightmare came to an abrupt end as they were able to release the pain and guilt they were holding on to that was denying them the opportunity to basically come up for air and enjoy their life as intended.
